Green Kerlin sustainable, honest, in a period building

We are not a new build with a solar roof, we are a Berlin period building. And that is where our biggest contribution lies: preserving an existing building instead of building a new one saves an enormous amount of energy and material.

For more than ten years we have also been doing whatever is possible in a historic building. For this we were awarded the EU Ecolabel, the official environmental label of the European Union.

Energy

  • 100 % green electricity for more than ten years
  • LED lighting in every room
  • Water-saving fittings in the renovated bathrooms, without compromising on water pressure

Materials

  • Carpets in the corridors and stairwell made from ECONYL yarn, recovered from recycled fishing nets and industrial waste
  • Vinyl and parquet floors with sustainability labels
  • Soaps with sustainable ingredients in bottles made of recycled plastic
  • Printed matter and paper made from recycled material, produced climate-neutrally. Since introducing our digital guest folder, we hardly print anything anyway.

Local and low in plastic

  • Coffee from Berliner Kaffeerösterei, organic tea from the Berlin company Schlürf
  • Fair-trade sugar and stirrers, compostable to-go cups, wooden spoons instead of plastic

We help things grow

Right opposite the Kerlin stands a large street tree, and we are its sponsors. We water and look after it and have turned the small bed around it into a garden: planted, with an insect hotel and with water and food for the wild birds. A little piece of nature in the middle of the city that you see every time you step outside.

Less is more

Daily room cleaning is only available on request, which saves water, electricity and cleaning products. We clean with ecological products by Frosch, and our supplier is certified to DIN EN ISO 14001 (environmental management). Fresh towels are always available to take under the stairs on the ground floor.

  • Switch off the light when you leave the room
  • Use your towels more than once
  • Heating on setting 2–3 in winter, on 1 while airing the room
